FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND INFORMATION

Q: What do I paint first, the trim work or the walls?

A: Paint the trim work first, then the walls. This will make it easier to sand, prep and paint all the details, edges, and planes of the trim work. After the coats of paint on the trim work are dry, mask off the trim work and paint the walls.

Q: I am getting ready to paint my house, but I have some rusty nails throughout the wood. How do I prevent this from showing through?

A: If nails have rusted and stained the exterior wood in the past, they’ll do it again unless you guard against it. To prevent repeat rusting, sand the rusting nail heads, then sink them below the surface of the wood. Next, seal them with a sealer, a primer-sealer or a primer that contains rust inhibitors. Finally, fill in the dent with putty to create a smooth, continuous surface.

Q: How much paint will I need?

A: Buying more paint than you need is not only more costly, but it also creates the problem of disposing of the leftover paint. Use all the paint that you buy. Apply an extra coat with leftover paint to give you more protection. Watkins Paint can help you select the the right amount of paint for your spaces.

Q: What do I do with the leftover paint?

A: Apply an extra coat with leftover paint to give you more protection. Leftover paint should not be poured down the drain or sewers. To dispose of latex paint let it dry by removing the lid and allowing the water to evaporate. Remember to keep the open can away from children. Paint cans with hardened paint can be disposed of in household garbage in most areas. Do not replace the lid. Alkyd or oil-based paints should be disposed of as a hazardous household waste. Contact your local municipality for disposal guidance. Paint thinners, turpentine, mineral spirits, and solvents should not be poured down a drain or sewer. These products can be reused by simply allowing them to sit in a closed container until paint particles settle out and the liquid becomes clear. Pour off the clear liquid and dispose of residue as hazardous waste.
